Sport brings about a raft of physical, psychological and social benefits that instils confidence and determination to approach all aspects of life with vigour and positivity. It not only equips young people with the necessary skills to adapt and respond to change in a society that is constantly evolving, but it develops character through building resilience, empathy and respect towards others.

Head of PE – Ryan Gregory

Sport at Kew House School plays a pivotal role in the physical and emotional development of its pupils. Whether it is through the core physical education curriculum, extra-curricular activities or the games fixture programme, all pupils have access to a wide range of sporting disciplines to engage in and enjoy. We value the importance of inclusivity, opportunity and choice to ensure participation is maximised across all ability levels.

We also place emphasis on performance by continually evolving our fixture programme, specialist training sessions and performance analysis to ensure that individual and team potential is recognised and realised. Having fostered strong links with local sports clubs, we not only have access to a host of top class sporting facilities in close proximity to the school, but have identified pathways for our pupils to continue their pursuit for sport and physical activity outside of school. See club links below for further information.

Games

There is a strong emphasis on team sports within our games curriculum whereby every pupil has the opportunity to represent the school in fixtures for the A, B or C team where possible (see our sports website for fixtures and results). For pupils who prefer not to engage solely in team sports, they have the option to participate in rowing as an alternative. Prior to each term, pupils can choose what sport they would prefer to participate in given the options relating to the time of the year. During the Autumn Term, the options are: rowing, football and netball; the Spring Term: rugby, hockey and rowing and in the Summer Term: cricket, tennis, athletics and rowing. Our senior sports programme for Sixth Form offers more variety with the inclusion of badminton, gym, yoga, zumba, boxing, rockclimbing, and basketball.

Rowing

Our rowing programme is extensive and very popular amongst our student body. Rowing sessions are open to all Kew House School pupils, including beginners. Pupils in Years 7 and 8 may choose Rowing as a Games option; pupils in Year 9 and above also have the option to join the extra-curricular training programme.

The weekly schedule outlined above allows our pupils to participate in more frequent sporting activity and an opportunity to use the fantastic gym facilities at the Quintin Boat Club. As a Boat Club, we are also able to store and launch all our boats from Quintin. This established rowing programme allows us to compete alongside other major rowing schools in the West London area, as well as regionally and nationally.

To support the running of Kew House School Boat Club (KHSBC), there is a termly membership for students wishing to participate in our extra rowing sessions. Rowing during Games sessions comes at no additional cost.

Please see termly club membership fees outlined below:

Year 9: £110
Year 10: £160
Year 11 – 13: £185

If you are interested in signing your child up to our outstanding rowing programme, please send an email to our Head of Rowing Mr Patrick Graham ([email protected]).

The Boat Club has ambitions to one day have KHSBC junior men and women represent the school at Henley Royal Regatta, the most prestigious international rowing event in the world.

Please check out KHSBC’s progress so far on our Twitter and Instagram page: @KHSBoatClub

Physical Education

For pupils who wish to pursue their passion for sport as an academic subject, we offer GCSE and A Level PE (AQA). Three hours of additional GCSE PE is timetabled which includes 90 minutes of theory and 90 minutes of additional practical lessons. The A Level course will benefit from six hours a week of theory-based PE lessons. Pupils will benefit from PE staff who have achieved MScs in sports medicine and exercise physiology and have also experienced playing sport at a high level within their respective disciplines.

Extra-Curricular

As part of our club programme, we offer compulsory training sessions for all A teams in the school’s core sports in addition to a variety of sports clubs that are open to all pupils. These range from: basketball, swimming, boxing, fencing, table tennis, dance and many more. We also offer a Top Performing Athletes Programme (TPAP) for our most gifted and talented athletes to ensure they are fulfilling their fitness potential within their respective sports.

Sports Tours

Kew House School have enjoyed a number of sports tours to date which include two successful international tours to Barbados (netball) and Madrid (football). We also run a popular annual ski trip to resorts in Italy and Switzerland.
