We must all do theatre, to find out who we are and discover who we could become – Augusto Baol (Brazilian Drama Theorist, Founder of Theatre of the Oppressed)
At Kew House School, opportunities to participate in drama are woven into the curriculum. We believe that taking part in a dramatic production of any kind is an incredibly valuable way to learn many important skills needed throughout life; Drama encourages creativity and imagination, it encourages students to think outside the box and take risks. It is a collaborative artform that helps students to develop empathy and to better understand others, by seeing how the world looks through another person’s eyes. Communication and literacy skills are also enhanced, and we see a great many of our students develop and improve their presentation skills, vocabulary, vocal projection, articulation and ability to express themselves. Drama can help students to develop transferable skills, such as problem solving, teamwork, public speaking, leadership and time management.
In today’s complex world, drama at Kew House School gives students the opportunity to explore, discuss and deal with difficult issues, express emotions and explore cultural values.
‘Kew House goes all West End’
Every year we go all out to stage a main school production, usually a musical, which gives a wide range of students a flavour of what it is like to be involved in a professional production, either on stage or behind the scenes, and to showcase their immense talents.
Past productions include: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dream-Coat,
Guys ‘n’ Dolls, Pygmalion, Little Shop of Horrors and High Society.
‘Summer Showcase’
At the end of the Summer Term our Year 7s and 8s put on a fabulous event where
they present a range of scenes from Shakespeare and other classic plays, interspersed with musical and dance items.
Extra Curricular
We offer a rich programme of extra curricular drama, with weekly clubs, allowing students to develop their drama skills and socialise.
