CURRICULUM SUBJECT

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is roughly equivalent to half an A-level and is available as a standalone qualification. It is a single piece of work of a student’s choosing that requires evidence of planning, preparation, research and independent learning. These are skills that are valuable for study at university.

Course overview

The Extended Project Qualification allows students to choose an area of interest to research and craft a project around. This allows them the chance to develop a range of skills such as researching, project management and writing that will prepare them for life after sixth form, either in the world of work or at university.

Course content

Students will choose from one of the four options available for their projects:

  • Unit 1: Dissertation – a theoretical written project on any topic presenting an argument, e.g. research into a biological, historical or environmental issue.
  • Unit 2: Investigation/Field Study – a practical investigatory project involving the collection of data, e.g. a scientific investigation, a geographical study of erosion, a biological study of pollution, a statistical survey.
  • Unit 3: Performance – development of practical skills resulting in a performance, e.g. performing music, drama, sport.
  • Unit 4: Artefact – for example, making a painting or sculpture, designing a piece of furniture or a garment, creating a website, solving an engineering/construction problem, producing a piece of graphic design.

Assessment

Students will be assessed by their mentor on a range of skills such as: the management of their project, their use of resources, the development of their project, decision-making skills, and their ability to review and reflect on the process throughout.

Career opportunities

The skills developed through the extended project are valued in any workplace as it shows an ability to manage your own work and time. It allows the students an opportunity to research an area in the field they may want to work in.

Students also develop useful skills for university such as researching a topic, writing about, and reviewing literature on a specific topic, and referencing. Universities value the EPQ highly and sometimes will tailor their offers to include the EPQ as it carries UCAS points.
